I'm still kicking myself for passing up an Ishapore 7.62 that had been turned into a really nice looking pseudo jungle carbine for $200.00.

Get an original Enfield clone. The Indian Ishapore Enfield was made in .308 in 2 versions, the 2A and 2A1, the only difference was one had the rear sight calibrated to 1000 yards, the other to 800 yards. But stock, the fixed magazine held 12 rounds.
