Normally I carry my JA-22 in an "inside the belt" holster. The safety is always on until ready to shoot, then I turn it to the "fire" position. Yesterday I had reason to use the pistol. After drawing it and trying to switch the Safety to the Fire position, the lever broke and the gun remained in the Safe mode. So much for that use. Thank God for another backup weapon.
Reading the manual, I am entitled to send the JA-22 back to the factory for a replacement part to be installed at a cost of $5.00. Hardly seems worth the hassle when I am perfectly able to install the broken Safe lever myself. Does the factory send parts (post Haste) for user installation?
Has anyone else ever run into a situation as this, or am I the only one with miserable luck?

Send in the broken part with proof of purchase and they'll send you a new one at N/C.
Yes, ocassionally a few pieces need replacement. _________________ Maine. Where the Moose is King of the Road (by default). |

Failure of a carry gun at the range? Been there done that....
Replace the part and carry on. Spend some good quality range time with that pistol once the part is replaced. The first reason being to make sure the new part is functioning properly. The second reason is to gain confidence in that pistol again.
I had a series '80 1911 Commander go TU at the range one day. Had carried it for several weeks and decided to blow the cobwebs out of the barrel with a quick magazine down range. Drew the pistol.....click.....cocked the hammer.....click. Failure of the series '80 internal firing pin block. (Fixed and traded quickly...back to series '70 for me) |

First, welcome to the forum.
I agree with the others! Call Jimenez Arms at 1-877-241-9938. The past couple of times I have talked to them in person, they sent the part the same day. Please note that they have "odd" hours--opening at 6am PST and closing early in the afternoon.
If you email, plan on it taking a week to hear from them. JimenezArmsInc@yahoo.com
Since it is an easy to replace--and easy to break--part, it is unlikely that they will ask you to send the pistol in.
As for carry, I leave the safety off and no round in the chamber due to the design of the pistol. I use the JA22 as a carry pistol with CCI Stingers or CCI Segmented Hollow Points (both are Hyper-Velocity Rounds that the JA22 loves!). The CCI SHP is as close to a personal protection round as you can get in 22LR.
If you are really concerned not having a round in the chamber, I would consider getting a Kel-Tec P series or Ruger LCP. _________________ The JA22 saga ended at 14,068 rounds on 11/19/09 RIP

i carry an early style J22 with the sliding safety that goes front to rear of the gun. i removed the safety from mine because the detent ball in the frame wasn't doing its job and the gun was sliding itself into safe mode while shooting it. i'm sure any lawyer would have my ass in a court of law if i shot someone in self defense with a gun modified to not have a safety, but whatever. its a backup gun and hopefully i'll never have to use my primary weapon, let alone a backup gun. _________________

Yup, they have to break for a siesta. Or is that a fiesta? |

WXH, I purchased an NIB JA-22 with a broken safety lever last summer. The lever was broken in the "safe" position and would not cock or load. The shop sold it to me for very little just to get rid of it. I called Jimenez and they sent out a new safety promptly.
I don't trust the safety on any J-22 or JA-22 for cocked and locked carry on my person. I do keep it in this condition for vehicle carry or in the home. The only thing that keeps the pistol from discharging is that little finger of metal on top of the sear. The safety only pushes the sear upward so that the trigger cannot be pulled. The safety of the later guns is made of plastic and easily broken. The older sliding safety levers were made of metal, but as Flow notes they can be unreliable also.
If there was a specific threat against me I might take a chance relying on the safety so that I could put the pistol in action with one hand and more quickly. In absence of this, I carry these guns with an empty chamber and safety off. The pistol itself is definitely reliable and accurate enough to protect yourself with, but the safeness of the firing mechanism doesn't have my confidence. _________________ If man could be crossed with the cat, it would improve man but deteriorate the cat. -Mark Twain |
