Welcome JC. AMT guns seem to be teetering on the edge of the SNS abyss, at least their smaller offerings are. They don't have a very good reputation for reliability. As far as I know they are steel and locked breech which would generally disqualify them. The AMT Hardballer 1911 was a well liked pistol by many. I would classify the Back Up as near SNS, similar to Rossi and Charter. _________________ A flowing river of illusion

I would say not SNS, but they seemed to have a lot of trouble.

Welcome to the forum...let us know your experience with the AMT...the Backup is one of those guns that is looked down upon by the 1911 crowd. However, it seems to be a popular carry gun.
I have never personally shot one, so your post has piqued my interest. _________________ Can a JA22 last 10K rounds? Mine did!

Got an older amt back up in 22 with single action hammerless and grip saftey plus little switch safty. Was a pain in the but when I first got it. Would not feed jamed half the time. While playing, I noticed it feed perfect if I kept pressure on the bottom of the clip so the clip was at the top of it's slop. The same with both clips,Sooo got an old veg can and cut out small shims from the bottom of the can and JB ed em to the bottom of the clip where the retension catch contacts the clip, taking up the slop and keeping the clips at their highest position. problem solved.
broke the extracter messing around with hot 22's, but still spits em out from blow back if quality ammo is used. Dependable and accurate

i don't know if i'd call AMT a SNS. it seems too nice to me, but its kind of in that nether region alongside brands such as accu-tek, charter arms, comanche, and rossi.
they are small, but they're not cheap. that's one of the things that defines SNS guns for me. they probably use a decent quality metal too, not just some cast aluminum alloy like jennings, bryco, and others.
AMT does have a pretty interesting history. my favorite collector/occasional gun show seller really likes those guns. he told me the whole story, but i only remember the part that they used to be called OMC. i remembered that because OMC is also the name of a boat motor company, but the two companies were never related. _________________
