It was a beautiful day in Northeastern Minnesota, with temps soaring into the 30's, just perfect for a quick afternoon outing to the local range. I've been anxious to try out the JA Nine after cleaning it up and working on the ramp a bit. This wasn't a long session, just enough to get a feel for the gun. I loaded the two mags with Winchester White Box, the WalMart bulk rounds that sell for $13 per 100. About the least expensive 9MM out there, and most available. I set up an IDPA target, and proceeded with my initial test run with the JA Nine. The first mag started off good, with five rounds in a row until a failure to feed on the sixth. I cleared that and re-inserted the mag and finished off the last six shots. I was shooting from about 15 feet out. The first picture shows the grouping in the center from the first mag out of the JA Nine.

The second mag went much the same. One failure to feed, which I attribute possibly to the WWB ammo, which I cleared, and then finished off the remaining shots. This time, I was aiming high, for the head shots, as you can see in the grouping in photo 2

I was very pleased with the performance of the JA Nine, with so little work put into it out of the box. THe trigger pull is smooth, believe it or not, and the recoil is hardly noticable. I then decided to try some hollowpoint, since everybody says how poorly this gun works with it. I took ten rounds of my carry ammo out of my Kel Tec, and loaded it in the JA Nine magazine. This was Remington UMC JHP. I shot for the lower end of the target to see how they would group. The JA Nine ran flawlessly with the hollowpoint! It actually ran better on the JHP than on the WWB FMJ. Here is picture three of the hollow point

So what can we say about the JA Nine? This gun is much better than its given credit for. The new production models from Henderson Nevada seem to be reliable, and will feed JHP. I'm not going to do any more work on it other than a little bit on the slide rails and a bit more polishing on the feed ramp. They like lube, and I think they like to be clean. I'm going to fine tune it a little more over the winter, and next spring, I'l take it to the range when the IDPA weekly shoots start. It will be fun to try to outshoot the "Experts" with their $1000/$2000 CUSTOM 1911'S and such with my $100 Jimenez. I'm sure I'll get some looks and comments. "What, you're going to shoot that P.O.S.?" Wait till they see what it will do. Should be a good laugh. I hope to take it out and shoot 100-200 rounds to break it in good, then I think it will be reliable for sure.

Nice post.

I have only taken out a NINE to shoot one time about a year ago. My father and I had zero failures to feed using 115g FMJ WWB, Blazer, and AE. Shot a box of each. I had great accuracy at 20 feet.

I will never forget this day because I made a silly mistake, but not a hard one to make. I loaded a mag of .380 AE FMJ (for a Cobra CA380 I brought as well) and fired it in the NINE. I only had 1 FTE out of 12 rounds. Not a hard mistake to make beause the AE box for 9mm Luger and 380acp look identical.

I tried to use Federal Hyrdashocks, but could not even chamber one. The hollow portion would hang on the ramp. I am happy to hear you had luck with the UMC Hollows. Perhaps this forum should start a list of ammunition experiences with different models? How could that be done?

Interesting post. Thanks. I was looking at getting one but was a bit hesitant as i had no idea how reliable they were. People still ride me about my JA-380, but i love it and generally shoot it more at the range than my Kahr 9 mil.

As soon as I move out of Cali, I'm going to buy a Nine. Every snob at my gun club gives me a hard time when I pull out my .380. After a few round they can't understand how I fail to have problems with her. I get this preformance without using Bulls tamming technique. Though after Christmas when I find time I plan on following all of Bulls advice.
Think about it the design is a simple blowback design.

Excellent! at what range was this? I expect your gun should work better after the mag is broken in, pretty much the same deal as a Hi-Point.

I suggest to keep your mag fully loaded overnight to relax the magazine spring, but that is some good accuracy! seems to shoot more accurate than my Hi-Point .40cal.

Where did you buy it? I wanted a JA-Nine.

This was shot at about 15 feet. The initial test was mostly about proper functioning rather than distance and accuracy, but I was surprised and pleased with the accuracy of the Nine at this distance. Next time out I'll try it at 20-25 feet and see how the results fare. I noticed some little burrs in the slide when I took it down again, so I'll smooth that out before the next range trip. I'll be posting some more simple instructions on preparation of the Nine out of the box shortly. Incidentally, I acquired this from a friend who took it as a partial trade on the sale of another gun. He wasn't interested in it, said he'd heard they don't work worth squat. He'll be surprised, too. But he can't have it back!
